Archive Monday: How to Plan Your Wedding Like a Wedding Planner

BAB posted this today, too. A little something something our country's newest and newbiest crop of The Engaged. It's going to be okay, y'all. You got everything you need:

I review bridal shows on my blog. And, I love going to them, it’s a great opportunity to find out what’s out there, what’s new, exciting, anything I can offer my brides to get them the wedding that they want. Plus, there’s just so much pretty. The last one I went to was in Pasadena a few weeks ago, and it was absolutely gorgeous. I was on my second pass around the floor, past the entrance again, when I started to notice something about all the brides that were walking into the room:
None of them were smiling.

None of them. In fact they were downright scowling – brows furrowed, frowning, just stressed. And I get it. I’ve been a wedding planner for almost ten years now, so sure, I get it. Each one of them was thinking, what if I can’t find what I want? What if I find what I want and it costs too much, or it’s not available when I need it? There are so many choices here, how do I even decide which one is right for me? What if no one else likes what I choose?? In the face of all this Pretty and all these options, there is all this stress and all this fear. And a lot of times it doesn’t go away once you’ve hired me, and have someone to hand the checklist over to. You bring it with you and you carry it along through the whole planning process. Which isn’t fun for you, at all!

The alternative? Thinking about your wedding like I do. I know that you are going to have a fabulous wedding day. I know this. It’s actually my favorite part of my job, showing you how it’s all going to work out. Because at the end of that night, it’s going to be you and the love your life, dancing with everyone else you love and who loves you. And that’s what you’re all there for. I see some skeptical faces out there. Of course it’s easy for me to say that, I do this every day. Yeah, that’s how I know that it’s going to be all right. Because I do this every day.

So, these are the three things I have to tell you, based on what I know from working with hundreds of wonderful couples over the years:

1. First of all, you need to look at your choices differently. You walked into this room thinking, oh my god there are so many different options, how am I going to find the ones that I need, that I want? Instead, say, wow, there are so many options out there, that there is no way that I won’t find what I’m looking for. There’s no way. I just have to keep looking, keep asking until I find IT. What’s in front of you right now is never the only thing that’s available. Now, you may get tired of looking. But that’s not the same thing.  It’s like when you’re shopping for anything else. Just because the first thing you see when you walk into the store is a fuzzy aquamarine sweater, doesn’t mean that you’re obligated to buy it before you walk out. You can choose, and you can also choose to walk away. And never, ever be afraid to ask questions. Ever.

#2 is why you need to give yourself a break. Go to The Broke Ass Bride and find out what it is, so you can take a breath NOW.

Love is Love and the Law of the Land #marriageequality

"No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice, and family. ... [The challengers] ask for equal dignity in the eyes of the law. The Constitution grants them that right." -- Justice Kennedy , 6/26/15

Finally. And of course. I've been coordinating and officiating same-sex weddings for eight years, and I'm just beyond thrilled this morning. All the love, all the joy, and the full-range of legal rights and equality has once again been expanded.

It might take awhile to materialize (and it often does), but this country believes, ultimately, in justice and fairness. And we always keep moving towards those ideals.

So, if you would like to take advantage of your legal rights as an American citizen and create a wonderful day and an awesome party with the Love of Your Life, visit my webiste at or shoot me an email at I'm here for whatever you need.

Cool Wedding Thing of the Week: Ally's (Surprise, and Virtual) Shower in a Box

Ally, one of my July Brides, wasn't able to make it back East for a bridal shower. And, since she's in the middle of her Pediatric residency right now, she couldn't really throw one in Los Angeles, either. So, her fiance Brian, her sister and her Mom came up with another idea. They sent out invites to everyone who would have come to a shower, with a date and time to hop onto when Ally would be home. The guests shipped gifts to Ally and Brian's address, Brian hid all around the apartment for weeks, and Ally had no clue (none), until she walked in her living room that day to this ^^^and Brian handed her  two big boxes filled with gifts, with this on top:

Then he set up her laptop....

...and Ally was able to open all of her gifts in front of her family and friends, and thank them in person. How awesome is that?? I love stuff you come up with. Like I said on Monday, it's my favorite thing.

Ask Liz: Hiding The Ugly at Your Wedding

The pin to this article I wrote on The Broke Ass Bride has been re-pinned almost 2300 times. Yes, I'm very proud. :-)
Photo: Martha Stewart Weddings

Dear Liz,
My problem is that I found a great venue (and affordable!) But there’s a propane tank surrounded by chain link fence riiight next to the entrance to the ceremony site. I’m trying to come up with ideas to hide it.

Theories of a Big Bang

Dear Bang,

Two part solution: 1. Call your venue and tell (“ask” won't work here) them that you want to cover it, and see what’s possible. If they don't own it or it’s not on their property, find out who’s property it’s on, and do the same thing. It could be owned by the city, or something like that.  Odds are, you are not the first person to ask about that thing, so find out what the answer is. 2. If you can cover it, cover it. Drape it, cover the sides you can see with rented trees and plants, or get some ideas from the Pinterest board I created, Hiding The Ugly At Your Wedding. Don’t be afraid to use colors.  You might have to erect poles or some sort of structure. If you don’t know how to do that yourself, ask your venue manager for the name of a rental company that might.

Do you have a burning wedding question? Email me at and let me know what's up. And in the meantime, sign up to get my tip sheet, "The Ten Things You Should Know About Your Wedding," and get a head start and a hand up to creating a wonderful and fun day.

Archive Monday: My favorite wedding idea is just ONE thought

This is from a Blog Hop I did back in April. Enjoy!

I love my job.  I've seen and helped create so many cool wedding ideas, like this one:
Photo: Simon Hurst Photography
My bride last month found this picture on A Practical Wedding and decided to carry balloons as a bouquet. I'm waiting on her pictures, but trust me for now, it was even cooler than this.

And this one:

Photo: Liz Coopersmith
Yes, that's a wedding pinata. That this couple made. Their guests had so much fun whacking it, and then diving into the candy like 5 year olds.

Ooh, and this one:
Photo: Liz Coopersmith
Two words: SMORES BAR. Planter, rocks, sterno cans. Easy to make, and just yummy. I may have had a few, but I will neither confirm or deny that.

These were some great ideas.
But I have one favorite wedding idea, that I've seen created again and again, despite any stress that happens before the big day. And it's the one idea that a lot of couples have a hard time believing is going to happen:

Your wedding is going to be a wonderful, extraordinary wedding day. With more smiles and laughter than you can imagine. All the ingredients are there: Everyone you love, all your family and friends, side by side with the love of your life. And the relief and joy you feel that you're finally all here together, to celebrate:

Oh, and Happy Anniversary, Raewyn and Iman!

And it happens every time:

My favorite part of every wedding day is watching you have fun, and hear you laugh, while I'm cleaning up, and giving further instructions, and checking on the coffee pot, or whatever. Repeating old jokes, creating new ones, kicking off your shoes and heading to the dance floor. And I say to you, "Look what you did, you guys. Look what you created."

Lesley Hall Photography

This will also happen at your wedding, I promise. All you have to do is believe it, and you'll see it, too.
