Happy Anniversary, Rima and Jesse! (Los Angeles Wedding Planner)

So, this is how we found Rima and Jesse's ceremony spot: We did it backwards. They'd picked the Rocco Room in Pasadena for their reception, and wanted to get married in a park nearby. I took them to Brookside Park, which is across the street from the Rose Bowl - if you've ever checked out the the Rose Parade floats on January 2nd, Brookside is where you went. It's a beautiful park, tons of trees, and the Kidspace Museum is on the far end. I initially showed them a small grove that would be perfect, but once we looked around, we found a wonderful little amphitheater, with a beautiful leaf-covered archway, over a stage! Couldn't have been more perfect.

The party really started when we got to the Rocco room. We couldn't get guests off the dance floor to start dinner, that is how much the DJ, Gimel Hooper of Klassic Produkshuns, rocked. And once they got back onto the dance floor...well, you know that Mexican money dance, where guests pin money on the bride and groom for a dance? There's a Filipino version of that, where you throw money at the bride and groom. End result? Bride, groom and guests boogying down on top of a floor covered in cash. It was awesome.

The Wedding Dress She Wanted: Meet Designer Sareh Nouri

Photo: Moshe Zusman
Sareh Nouri was a bride after my own heart, determined to have her wedding her way: “I always had a really big passion for bridal gowns, since I was young,” she said. “And when it came time for my wedding, I went to different salons, and I couldn't find a dress that I wanted, what I'd envisioned. I liked the top of one dress, the bottom of another. And I thought, it's too bad I can't combine them! So, I decided to design my own dress. I found a great dressmaker, went to the garment district and bought my fabrics, and she made exactly what I wanted."

Sareh has a big, bubbly personality, which comes out in her awe of the phenomenal response to her first collection - Since January, her dresses have been on the covers of five wedding magazines, Brides magazine has compared her dramatic and romantic sensibility to dress giants Monique Lhuiller and Marchesa, she's been featured on TLC's "The Brides of Beverly Hills", and Miss America is going to wear one of her designs when she becomes a Mrs. later on this year.

I mean, really.

But like most "overnight" successes, this didn't happen overnight, either.

Shortly after their wedding in D.C., she and her husband moved to New Jersey, where the former graphic design major found a job first as a sales person, and then as a buyer for a high-end wedding salon. For three years she modeled dresses, sold dresses, and became an expert in the wedding couture industry, and, more importantly, in what appealed to brides the most. We talked about that great feeling we've both experienced when we'd watch a bride try on THE dress, and no other one will do. "I could tell two minutes after a bride walks out of the dressing room, if it's the right one or not. And I've never seen a bride change her mind," she agreed with me.

Photo: Moshe Zusman
Her desire grew to design her own gowns, so she decided to give it a shot. They were first sold in her salon's two locations. "In the beginning, I was a little intimidated, so when brides would try on one of my dresses, I wouldn’t tell them that it was mine. But when they would pick it over Vera Wang, I would get so excited!" she said. In the first year, she sold 150 gowns. Seriously!

Her Spring 2012 collection is currently carried in only five stores across the country. Two are in New Jersey, twenty minutes from New York City, and there are two in the D.C. area, where she hails from. And, since last May, she's been exclusive on the West Coast to Renee Strauss Bridal in Beverly Hills. The price point for the collection starts at $3,900.

Photo: Moshe Zusman

Her dresses are made of fine French lace and Italian silk, but Sareh is proud to say that each is handmade in the U.S. Her passion for her work and her clients is infectious, and she sums up her personal philosophy neatly in a quote on her website, "I believe finding a wedding dress is like finding a true friend; you should be able to trust it, you should never regret it, and whenever you see it...it should always make you smile."
Yes. This.

Wedding Vendors on Craigslist?

I'm finishing up a new budget wedding planning e-book, and I'm wondering how many brides out there really are finding their wedding vendors on Craigslist? Photographer, florist, DJ?

I started out advertising my business there, lo, those many years ago, so I know you can get quality work, relatively cheaply.
But was it worth it for you? Or did it become a choice between money and their inexperience? Would you do it again? Let me know in the comments below....

p.s. - if you want a heads up when the book is available, click here and choose "10K Wedding" as an option!

Monday, Monday...

www.sarehnouri.com
So, I just finished an interview with designer Sareh Nouri. Is this dress not gorgeous? The interview will be blogged by Thursday. Would love to get it up sooner, but...

I've got a marathon of site visits to finalize for Saturday. Bride's in San Francisco, with one weekend to check 'em all out, so she hired me to help with the search. DTLA>San Pedro >Santa Barbara>Malibu. Yeah, you read that right. Thinking of making the boy meet me in SB for margaritas and an overnight. There's something about hotels...

And I got my first Charmed Consultation review on Yelp.com. Yay!

"I had a 1 hour charmed consultation with Liz last month. Best $50 I have spent in a long time. My fiancee and I are on an extremely tight budget. I was feeling like maybe we should just give up and elope because their was no way that we could find venues that would meet our standards and our budget. Liz and I had a fun casual conversation for an hour.  I came out with multiple leads in our price range, renewed excitement, and actually started looking forward to the challenge of making it happen for less money!
If you can't afford a wedding coordinator but need guidance and ideas I would highly recommend a consultation with Liz. She will get you on the right track so you don't needlessly waste time and energy that you really need while wedding planning." - Monique D.

Yes, what she said. What's your wedding challenge right now? Charmed Consultations are $35 for 30 minutes, or $50 for an hour, and we'll tackle any problem you've got, in detail, until you've got the answers you need. PLUS, I'll donate $5 from every session I book this week to Brides Against Breast Cancer.
Just email me at liz@silvercharmevents.com or call my office at 323-592-9318 to schedule a session.

Brides Magazine: 10 Secrets Only Wedding Planners Know (Los Angeles Wedding Planner)

From Brides Magazine. These are GOLD, I tell you!

10 Secrets Only Wedding Planners Know

From Brides.com

We asked event pros how to troubleshoot any potential pesky day-of problems—and save yourself from a premarital meltdown.

planning-tips250.jpg

1) "Know the neighborhood. Drive around the area of your venue before your wedding day," says Nisa Lee, a Pelham, New York, planner. "Be on the lookout for the closest ATM, hardware store, drugstore, liquor store, and stationery store, in case you have any last-minute needs during your party." Make note of the opening and closing times of each one.
2) "Think through the entire event a few weeks before the wedding from the guest's point of view," says New York City's Xochitl Gonzalez. "Every minor detail should be covered, like who will hand out the programs and how to shuttle guests from the church to reception."
3) Make sure you have a few extra seats and dinner setups (plates, flatware, glasses, and napkins) for any surprise guests who show up, suggests Tara Wilson of Fort Worth, Texas. It happens more often than you'd think!

Click here and find out what 4-10 are! Between you and me, 6 & 7 are my favorite, and #9 is a MUST DO.

Quote of the Week - Los Angeles Wedding Planner

"You know the old saying "you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar?" It's true. And believe me, I have to remind myself of that every single time some nutjob wedding guest starts bitching at me for something completely beyond my control. But the old adage is very true for brides and grooms on their wedding day. As long as you stay sweet, as long as you smile, and as long as you ask nicely for whatever it is that you really need, you will be amazed at how the people who are tasked with making your experience flawless will trip over themselves to make sure you are happy. I sure do."

Pinterest Weekly Round-Up

If you want to find out what I'm finding on Pinterest, follow me! Here are my most pinned wedding pins from the past week:

1. This gorgeous ceremony curlie-cue got re-pinned THIRTEEN times in the past week. As I said, it's fantastic, because this way, you're surrounded by everyone you love as you get married. The original picture is by Blenda Montoro Photography.

2. Kiss My Tulle's post about how to create a total bridal ensemble for less than $300, Inexpensive Options - Affordable Dress +Stella and Dot Accessories!

3.  I posted another version of this in the Wedding Wise last week, but I just LOVE this idea. In a "Man, I wish I could have patented it!" way.

4. Wedding Hack of the Week - Number the back of your RSVPs, so it's easier to keep track of who's coming and who's ordering what. Some guests will just mark the RSVP or put "yes" or "no", without writing their names. Proactivity is the name of the game.

Happy Anniversary, Angie and Justin

Angie and Justin, 7/9/11
Happy First Anniversary to Angie and Justin! Their gorgeous wedding was at Calamigos Ranch. Angie only wanted two things - purple lanterns and french macaroons. The lanterns were easy, but the macaroons? The macaroons...my assistant and I searched far and wide for them. You wouldn't think it would be that hard, would you? Some were expensive, some had to be delivered, some were just bad.
I might have mentioned at some point that my office is in a Studio Lot, where they shoot True Blood (Yes, Alcide is even hotter in person, no, I am serious), so I went to the studio cafe for lunch, and there were macaroons. $1 a piece, discount for bulk, and unbelievably good. The cafe is run by a catering company called Global Cuisine, the macaroons are still yummy, and they are still the same price. GO.

But what I remember most about their wedding was walking outside, around 9 o'clock at night, and there was Angie, shoes off, feet propped on a table, fluffy princess dress pooled around her feet, laughing hysterically with her friends. My favorite part of every wedding. You'll get there, too.

Speaking of which, I'm still scheduling Charmed Consulations for this week, $35 for 30 minutes, or $50 for an hour, and I'm booking Day of Coordination for this fall. So whether you want a wedding tune-up session or some serious help on the big day, just let me know what you need!
