Your Wedding vs. The Holidays

Happy Holidays, everybody! Here's the re-post of the blog I wrote for today:

So, the Holidays are now upon us, and you might be feeling some trepidation about seeing family and friends, and talking, talking about your wedding.

It is a truth universally recognized that weddings make families do the wacky. I've said and written it a million times. Here are some tips for getting through the wackiness during the holidays:

1. Remember that your family actually loves you. They do. They love you, and they want the best for you. They just think that what's best for you is what they think is best for you. Parents, especially, are used to guiding you and used to you having to listen to them. And that's whether it's about what time you need to go to bed to wake up early for school, or inviting your third cousin to your wedding. They are trying to create the best experience for you that they can. So, when cousin Trudy comes up for the third time during dinner, just think, "They are not trying to ruin my life, they are trying to help." Because they are. That being said...

2. Pressure is not priority. You do not have to do a darn thing any of them suggest. When a subject of conflict comes up, you have two choices, both of which work:

The first is to express extreme enthusiasm over your flower/linen/bridesmaid/meal/name change choice, and how you couldn't see it happening any other way. You are SOO happy with what you're doing! And you are, right? Very hard to keep pushing in the face of that.

The second is to put the discussion off. Tell them that, THANK GOODNESS, You do not have to finalize your decision on the flower/linen/bridesmaid/meal selection/name change choice until sometime in 2012, fortunately! So you have plenty of time.

3. Both options require immediately moving away after they are implemented. No, I'm serious. Smile, and GO.

I didn't say it would be easy, especially in the beginning, but I swear to you, it works. No crying, screaming, no "why do you ALWAYS do this??" has to be involved. Assert, smile, and leave the area ASAP. And head straight for the eggnog, if you have to.

See you at the end of the aisle,

Liz Coopersmith

2011 Favorite Pics - The Couples

So, as we're getting down to the end of the year, I have so many photographs that I just love, but I think that these are my six favorites. Vote below for yours, for the chance to win a $10 Kindle gift certificate. Voting ends Wednesday at 10am!

April 16 - Nicole and Andrew, Calamigos Ranch, B & G Photography

This picture is on my website, and on my office wall. It sums up their wedding perfectly: Not just filled with love and affection, but fueled by Heineken, too. Nikki bounced around all night with that bottle (and a couple more like it) saying to me, "This is great. This wedding is exactly what I wanted my wedding to be." And I can never ask for any great praise than that, you know?

June 11, Brandi and Kendall, Calamigos Ranch, Up Imagery

This was the second of two weddings that I coordinated at Calamigos Ranch this year. Brandi and Kendall? Just glowed around each other. Like, all day I was thisclose to being too embarrassed to be anywhere near them.

Rima and Jesse, July 30, Brookside Park and the Rocco Room, Our Favorite Day Photography

So much love, so much music, and so much fun. It was about 105 degrees outside, so Rima and Jesse had these fans made for their guests, and plenty of water bottles nearby. I only stole one of them, for my office.

Michelle and Jonathan, September 4, Calamigos Ranch, Micah and Megan Photography

So, what happened here was, Jonathan stomped his foot on the cloth-covered glass...and it skidded right into the bushes. And this was their instant reaction. Love it. I've said before that this is one of those things that's funnier when it's not happening to you. But it's great when it's funny when it is happening to you, you know?

Danielle and Paul, September 24, 2011, Saddlepeak Lodge, Joey Ikomoto Photography

The techophile in me just had to put this in there. How cool is that? Go check out the rest of their pictures, too. The chuppah alone will blow your mind.

November 12, Nisha and Bryan, First Congregational Church of Long Beach, Third Eye Open Photography

I love watching a bride's vision come to life. Just seeing that "Christmas morning" look in a bride's eyes over and over again. The red dresses, the beautiful church, the perfect dress. I worked with Nisha and Bryan for over a year, and I just dug the way Nisha was determined to have the wedding she wanted the way she wanted it. And just look a the results. LOVE this picture.

My Wedding Weekend - The I Do Bridal Event 11/20

Sunday morning, I hiked over to the Langham in the rain (PORTLAND- like rain) to attend the I Do! Bridal Event, which was sponsored by Fancy That Events. THIS cake is by Raffi's Pastries, isn't it gorgeous??

Check out this short video I took:

I ran into a lot of my past wedding vendors at the show:

Fantasy Frostings was REALLY popular. I visited their table a couple of times myself. Okay, three. But the third time was to pick up samples for my husband Zane, honest!

Winnie Couture:

Shirvan Designs:

And TOTAL Best of Show? Glow Concepts. They did all the linens for Angela and Reginald's wedding in July. And they totally showed up to play here. Check out this floating table number:

And Eng came up with this idea for a throw bouquet, but you can have her custom design one of or you or your bridesmaids, too:

Can't decide which of the two is going to make cool thing of the week. What do you think?

Sweet Dreams: Nisha and Bryan's Wedding

Review: David Tutera's My Fair Wedding 11/13/11

He's back! I've said it before - his is the only wedding show that I can watch. I love the whole idea of taking a bride's vision and just upgrading it into something wonderful. Most of the time, what they've started out with isn't bad, but with a little tweaking, it can be so SO much better. I'm a pretty good "editor" myself, and I have to confess that one of my favorite things as a planner is to say to a bride, "But you can also do it THIS way" and hear them say, "Ooh!" So, yes, I have a little bit of an ego, too!

So, this week, David is traveling to Topeka, KS. 17-year old Ryan, was diagnosed with cancer, and he was granted a wish by the Make-A-Wish Foundation. His wish? Give his Mom, Wendy, the wedding of her dreams by bringing in David Tutera.
David walks into a room filled with Make a Wish volunteers wearing snazzy "Team Ryan" t-shirts. David's got one week to pull this off, so he's going to need all the help he can get. The president of the foundation, David Williams, explains that not all wish grantees are terminal patients (Ryan is currently in remission), which I didn't know, actually.
Kathy Griffin has this bit when she talks about Oprah - that people freak out when she enters the room - crying, screaming, jumping up and down. The same usually happens when brides open the door and David Tutera is on the other side. The 17-year old boy? Becomes monosyllabic. He's obviously in shock, but really happy.

The theme of her wedding: Origami cranes and Cherry blossoms. Wendy is looking for peace and calm, a real zen experience. She's made origami crane accessories for her bridesmaids, and favors for her guests - all 200 of them. Dinner will be a Chinese buffet catered by a local grocery store. And here comes the "Whaa?" Moment in David's head. He's trying not to judge, dude, TRYING not to judge, but his voice goes just a littlebithigher when he replies,"Sure!" Actually,on second thought, it's not judging, it's panic - a week out from her wedding, and all Wendy has shown him are accessories, centerpiece vases, and a pair of platinum pumps by Jessica Simpson. And the only thing that's finished are the pumps. If Wendy had her way, she'd like the room filled with cherry blossom trees and an aisle runner. Pretty simple and elegant.
BUT, her bridesmaids are wearing heavy black dresses, and Wendy's dress doesn't really fit very well. As David points out, neither really fit into her zen style.
Time to try on wedding dresses! Go to minute 19:56 to take a look at her choices. Wendy doesn't like the second dress, but is cool with the first and second one. When it comes to bridesmaid dresses, Wendy's got some great options, too. She really likes the dark gold floor-length dress, but I'm digging the dark red knee length gown.

Then we're off to tuxedos for Ryan and Rocky, Wendy's fiance. Rocky thinks the first tuxedo makes him look like a UPS truck driver. Hah! Ryan doesn't like the second tuxedo with the bow tie. Makes him think of James Bond. Wendy likes the third tuxedo with the long tie. What will David choose??

Now it's time to pick the favors. Wendy's favorite is a dollar coin that can be tossed in a wishing well and donated back to the Make a Wish Foundation. Not sure how that would work. Does Wendy buys the dollar coins, then basically she's making the donation, right? Although I doubt if she's paying for them...I'm thinking real world applications, and maybe I should just stop. Anyway, it's a very sweet idea, and, hey, wishing well in the middle of your wedding reception! That's pretty cool.

Dress Reveal! What do you think?

Go to 44:51 for the reveal of the reception. It's beautiful! Wood, live and silk cherry blossom stands. Orchids and Topiaries and custom made linens, table cloths and overlays in a green and gold color scheme. Again, very simple and very elegant. If you'd like some tips on how to find something like this in your price range, email me and I can send you in the right direction. Because, really, each of these table set-ups is around $400 + each, easy.

And at the end of the night? A band and fireworks. Nice job, David.

See you at the end of the aisle,

Liz Coopersmith

The Best Day of Your Life? Nope, Can't Sell That.

Not with a straight face, that is. Because if your wedding day is the best day of your life, then you're screwed. Not just because of whatever life looked before, but what it's going to look like in the future. It might be one of the best days of your life, it should be a great day in your life but the best? Nah. Not if I have anything to say about it.

I love it because it totally sums up what their wedding felt like. Andrew's got a Heineken on his left (which I think I brought him) they're both really happy (Nikki spent a lot of time wandering around saying "This is EXACTLY what I wanted." Not making that up). Their family and friends are in the background having a good time, and in about 30 minutes the dance floor is going to be packed and rocking. It was a party. But really, it boils down to just the two of them, relaxed and happy.

So, I can't promise you the Best Day of Your Life. What I can promise is a great start: A day surrounded by everyone you love and who love you, with all of your favorite things, a wedding that is as unique and dynamic as you are. And when you look back on it, you'll do what I'm doing right now while I'm looking at this picture: Smiling.

What do you need to make that happen? Anything is possible.

So, let's do it. Email me with your wedding date, and we'll set up your complimentary consultation this week. Let's get you started on one of the Best Days of Your Life.

See you at the end of the aisle,

Liz C.

Every Wednesday, I bring you the best wedding stories, deals and events in Los Angeles and from around the web. And we call it Wedding Wise Wednesday. Welcome!

Cool Wedding Thing of the Week: "Occupy My Life!" One Occupy Wall Street protestor got down on one knee and proposed to his girlfriend, with a full chorus behind him. Very cool. One might even say, the coolest. Thanks to Huffington Post Weddings for the find, this completely made my day.

The Events:
First of all, I have to push mine. Next Wednesday at 7pm, I'm restarting the "What You Don't Know About Your Wedding" class series, interviewing one of my favorite DJs, Bill Child. What are the three questions every couple asks their DJ? What are the three questions they should ask? The class is free but I need RSVPs. We'll be taking questions by text and twitter, too. I'm setting up an interview with a bartender for the week after, so stay tuned.

Volunteering at the Brides Against Breast Cancer Event

I had the BEST time yesterday, volunteering at this event. This sale comes to Los Angeles every year, and benefits Making Memories, an organization that grants wishes to Women living with stage 4 breast cancer.

All the dresses are gorgeous, and all are discounted at 75%. Today is the last day of the sale, go to for more info.

I taped a bunch of videos on my phone, and here's one. You can look at the rest on my YouTube Channel, at

See you at the end of the aisle,

Wedding Wise Wednesday - October 12

Every Wednesday I bring you the best wedding stories, events and deals in Los Angeles and around the web. And we call it Wedding Wise Wednesday. Welcome!

Cool Wedding Thing of the Week - in a landslide - Always a Blogsmaid's Lessons from Kim Kardassian's wedding. Hilarious, because they're true.

Cool, too: Bride and Bloom's blog - Not just because my wedding with Jessica and Roger at the Long Beach Museum of Art is featured in it, but a LOT of weddings at the Long Beach Museum of Art are in there. I love the different ways that couples make a space their own.(Photo by Mia Dolce)

Friday - Saturday, October 14, 15
Brides Against Breast Cancer
I love events that are also deals, that also benefit a great cause. Beautiful gowns, some pre-owned, many donated by designers and shops around the country, all at up to 75% off. Yours truly will be volunteering on Friday between 10am - 2pm, during their "Power Hour Preview Shopping Spree" - $10 gets you admission and first pick. If you see me, say Hi.

Sunday October 16
The Everything Wedding Bridal Show

This is going to be cool. If you've never been to Adamson House, here's your chance - a wonderful high-end bridal show complete with cocktails, a couture bridal show by R-Mine, one of my favorite designers, and cake by Fantasy Frostings, one of my favorite bakeries! Tickets are $20 online, $25 at the door. I might make it to this one, too.

First of all, I'm still looking for a couple more guinea pigs to try out my Charmed Circle Consultations call. Each hour is worth $50, and you'll be getting an hour FREE. Our phone call will also be recorded, so you can play it back and listen later, just in case you missed something. Email me with three problems you're having with your wedding right now, and we'll schedule a time of us to talk. Don't miss this opportunity to get the help you need for free.

This week is all about your invitations

Rachel Carl, who has calligraphed invitation addresses and place cards for 4 of my brides this year, is offering 20% off Bickham Script font for your wedding or holiday party invitations if you order by Oct 14th! That would be Friday. She's awesome, why are you still reading this? GO.

Wedding Chicks has just released a new series of FREE wedding invitation template downloads, which are just gorgeous.

Dress Rush, which I told you about last week, has a great, free deal today - a $15 gift certificate for invitations by Peacock Printing. All you have to do is retweet the deal or put it up on Facebook. You're already a member...right?

See you at the end of the aisle (and at Brides Against Breast Cancer on Friday),
